During my tenure at Dad’s Garage, I had the pleasure of writing and appearing in many different publications.

Exit Interview: After Dad’s Garage, Lara Smith finds a new purpose is possible
Lara Smith counts two things as her proudest achievements of her nine years as managing director of Dad’s Garage Theatre Company, the comedy improv theater troupe. The first was securing its forever home, an Old Fourth Ward church it renovated and opened in 2015, after development plans pushed it out of its longtime Inman Park facility. The second has been helping support its artists and staff during the pandemic by raising $50,000 in emergency funds.

Lara Smith on Making the Shift to Consulting from Nonprofit Life
As a type-A person, I’ve always been good at checking things off to-do lists. But how do we make sure we’re always working towards our legacy, as people, and as organizations? This is going to sound dark, but every year I write my obituary as a way to keep my why as a North Star. Five years ago, as I worked on it, I identified that it’s my purpose in life to help people and organizations reach their full potential. I have loved getting to do it at Dad’s, because I am able to have a deep impact on staff and a more shallow impact on every single person who walks through the door.

Dad’s Garage outgoing managing director Lara Smith takes new consulting role
During her nine years as Dad’s Garage Theatre’s managing director, Lara Smith oversaw the fundraising, search, and then purchase and renovation of an Old Fourth Ward church the nonprofit theater company has called its “forever home” since 2015. Pre-pandemic, Smith doubled the 26-year-old Dad’s Garage annual budget to almost $1.9 million. Smith takes her final bow as managing director on Aug. 13, transitioning into a full-time role with the consulting firm Purpose Possible.

Lessons in Leadership: Dad’s Garage managing director Lara Smith departs after a decade
For many years, I would joke with Lara Smith that she was one of the “Great Leaders of Our Time.” Although you may not immediately recognize her name, Lara has been the managing director, aka: the business brains, behind Dad’s Garage Theatre for close to ten years.

A reflection on leadership in non-profit arts, occasioned on Lara Smith leaving Dad’s Garage
Even though being a leader in the arts is a tough job, Lara has excelled in the face of setbacks, challenges, and frustrations. Having served faithfully for over a decade, Lara is stepping down from her role this year and passing the baton to Stacey Sharer, the new managing director. Over her 10-year tenure, Lara has exemplified leadership in ways that I would like to share with you here. I hope that this can inspire other business leaders to become more engaged with arts organizations because we need strong leadership in this sector.

PPP2, SVOG, OMG: What You Need to Know About Relief for Your Theatre
Like many folks in the theatre industry, I have been anxiously awaiting clarification about SVOG and PPP2, patiently preparing for the programs’ experts to weigh in. Unfortunately, what I’ve learned is that there are no experts poised to swoop in, and no deus ex machina to explain it all for us. It’s up to us to figure it out and support one another—the one consistent lesson of this COVID experience.

Synchronicity Theatre announces 2021 virtual ‘Women in the Arts and Business Luncheon’
Synchronicity Theatre will host a virtual panel discussion for the 2021 Virtual Women in the Arts and Business Luncheon on Friday, April 30, from 12 p.m. —1:30 p.m., followed by 30 minutes of small group networking time, a press release says.

2021 Atlanta 500: Arts, Sports, & Entertainment
Lara Smith moved to Atlanta in 2007 to become the development director of Dad’s Garage, moving to Actor’s Express for a couple of years in 2010 and then stepping into her current role in 2012. When the theater lost its home of 18 years, Smith helped secure a temporary space and led the purchase of a long-term home, which opened in 2015 in the Old Fourth Ward, through a nontraditional capital campaign. In 2015 she was one of the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s 40 Under 40, and she was part of the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Regional Leadership Institute class of 2017. President of the board of the Old Fourth Ward Business Association, she focuses on arts advocacy to ensure that the creative industry has the support it needs to flourish.

How One Georgia Theater Brought Delight to the Polls
Dad’s Garage Theatre—an improv and scripted comedy theater in Atlanta, where I work as managing director—is typically a very busy space. In normal times, we have eight shows a week for the public, plus rehearsals and workshops, and our administrative offices are on site. But like so many cultural institutions during the pandemic, our building has sat mostly empty since mid-March. Still, because we’re a nonprofit, I wanted to find ways for our community to benefit from the space, so I was excited when I heard that Fulton County was looking for more polling locations, and even more excited when we were selected! Voting this year was more important than ever, and I knew that Dad’s Garage could make the experience unique and enjoyable.

Dad’s Garage fêtes 25 years with 25 hours of live improv
Twenty-five years ago, a cohort of freshly minted graduates from Florida State University’s School of Theatre moved to Atlanta and started a theater company. It wasn’t just any theater company though. It was a gonzo, punk rock kind of theater company run by a group of subversive, irreverent bootstrappers who loved improv and called themselves Dad’s Garage Theatre.

Dad’s Garage celebrates 25 years of improv frivolity
Dad’s Garage, the hardy Atlanta improv theater, had grandiose 25th-anniversary plans this August: a big outdoor street party with carnival rides, beer and alums flown in from around the country.
But the pandemic scuttled those plans.
Atlanta Arts Organizations Predicted To Lose More Than $10 Million During COVID-19 Shutdown
“I found myself over the past three or four weeks unaware of how much time has passed. I kept saying, ‘We need data. We need this survey. We need to be able to share kind of a snapshot of what’s happening in this sector.’ I finally realized that I had to stop saying it or do the survey,” Smith said.

Can We Say ‘Yes, And’ to This Crisis?
What a time to be alive. This is a phrase I have said so often I actually got it tattooed on my body. I love it for its ambiguity—it’s not making any judgments, it can be used both positively and negatively, and it reminds me of the magic in the world. We are truly lucky to be here, breathing air, living our lives.

The Arts as Community Builders
So often we say “Art Builds Communities,” but what the heck does that even mean? What constitutes a “community,” and how do the arts support their development?

Data's Artful Impact
What surprises a lot of people about Dad’s Garage—an Atlanta home for improv and scripted comedy theatre—is that we run much like any other business in town. We have budgets, meetings, strategic planning, and all the other boardroom business just like you. Perhaps the difference is that at Dad’s Garage we spend a lot of time laughing (which is something we help other businesses do through our corporate programs).

Why Arts Organizations In Atlanta Must Engage Their Local Representatives
We contribute to the local economy, we employ industry professionals and artists and we help drive sales at local service industry businesses.
